Process and Timeline for United Methodist Status Conversations

The below process/timeline has been developed to assist Broadmoor UMC-Shreveport (BUMC), as a church body, to discern our future with the United Methodist Church (UMC). Also included are options of what might happen if we choose to begin the discernment process.

  1. Informational Packet distribution (February)

  • Please read all the information contained in this packet so you can better understand the process, timeline, and issues in order to make an informed decision.

  • The Subcommittee on United Methodist Status is soliciting invitations to small groups and Sunday school classes that wish to know more about the issues facing the United Methodist Church. This is a short presentation followed by a question and answer session for your group members. A survey will be provided so that your perspective and questions can be taken into consideration. If your group is interested, please email governance@broadmoorumc.org, reply with your desired date and time, and we will respond accordingly.

   2.  UM Status Subcommittee recommendation and Governance Board decision (March-April)

Based on all that will be captured from the Listening & Learning sessions and survey, the UM Status Subcommittee will make a recommendation to the Governance Board whether or not to hold a Church Conference for the purpose of voting on disaffiliation prior to April 30th.

  • If the Governance Board votes AGAINST holding a Church Conference, Broadmoor UMC would remain with the United Methodist Church.

  • If the Governance Board votes FOR holding a Church Conference, Broadmoor UMC would begin the discernment process and a meeting for all church members to vote on disaffiliation would likely be held in late April.

    • If the in-person Church Conference (i.e. all the members of the congregation present at the church conference, including youth confirmands) votes AGAINST disaffiliation, Broadmoor UMC would remain with the United Methodist Church.

    • If the in-person Church Conference (i.e., all the members of the congregation, including youth confirmands) votes with two-thirds majority FOR disaffiliation…

      • Completed withdrawal agreement and payment (estimated at about $500,000) would be required no later than May 31st to make the Annual Conference agenda.

      • Decision needs to be ratified at Annual Conference June 13-16, 2023.
