Broadmoor UMC-Shreveport

Church Findings Summary Letter

March 2023

Dear faithful members and friends,

Grace and peace to you during this season of Lent. Over the past year, questions have arisen regarding the current state of the United Methodist Church. These questions have centered around various concerns and have been heightened by the news that some churches are seeking to disaffiliate from our denomination. In response to these questions and concerns, the pastoral leadership and governance board members of Broadmoor UMC formed a subcommittee of volunteers to ascertain the next steps for our church.

The subcommittee compiled and made available an information package (found on our website and at the church’s welcome desks) and held Listening and Learning informational sessions with the congregation. Following each Listening and Learning session, a survey was taken to anonymously gauge the perspective of each participant. Of those responding to the survey, 76% expressed a desire for Broadmoor to remain a part of the United Methodist Church. These findings were consolidated into a report and presented to our full Governance Board this past Sunday. After a review by the Governance Board, a motion was passed that Broadmoor will not enter the formal discernment process and will not have a congregation wide vote on consideration of disaffiliation. In short, this means that Broadmoor UMC will remain United Methodist. The survey results and findings will be published on the Broadmoor UMC website (http://www.broadmoorumc.org/churchfindings) or can be requested from the Broadmoor UMC office. As we continue through these days of Lent, drawing closer to the celebration of Easter, we have much to celebrate as a community of faith and as God’s people.

While it is true that we do not always know what the future holds, we do know the One who holds the future. Let us continue to look toward a bright future filled with hope as we seek to be one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, helping others and ourselves to know, grow, and go in God’s love.

Thank you as always for your continued support.
