Lifting Our Voice in Song

Singing is one of the primary ways we give praise to God and focus our hearts on His Presence. Within John Wesley’s instructions to the original Methodist was this charge: “Sing! Let not a slight degree of weakness or weariness hinder you. If it is a cross to you, take it up and you will find it a blessing... Sing lustily and with good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep... Above all sing spiritually. In order to do this, attend strictly to the sense of what you sing and see that your heart is offered to God continually.” So, no mouthing or mumbling the words. (Besides, most of us can’t even begin to carry a tune in a bucket; but that’s not going to stop us.) Just listen to the melody, open your mouth, and make a joyful noise!
