Two women’s studies to be offered

Two women’s Bible studies will be offered at Broadmoor United Methodist Church this summer.

The Beth Moore Bible study "Stepping Up: A Journey through the Psalms of Ascent" will explore Psalms 120-134. Traveling pilgrims sang these psalms on the way to the great Jewish festivals and as key elements of worship at those festivals.

The seven-week study will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesdays in Room 200 starting May 28.

Rev. Kathy Wafer said this study can help "gain a new appreciation for the life of faith as a journey to greater fellowship with and worship of God."

Also, a women’s book discussion and spiritual formation group using Jennifer Rothschild’s book "Self Talk, Soul Talk: What to Say When You Talk to Yourself" will be held from 10-11 a.m. Thursdays starting June 5. This six-week study will look at how what we say to ourselves, our "soul talk," has a powerful impact on our self-perception. The book focuses on how to quiet one’s soul and turn your self-image into the one you were created to have.

The book fee for each study is $13. Sign up at the reception desk. For more information, contact Wafer at 861-0586.

Bedding kits can help in disasters

The United Methodist Committee on Relief has asked the Shreveport District of the United Methodist Church to assist with an urgent need for hurricane kits.

As hurricane season nears, bedding kits can provide some comfort and rest to those displaced in such disasters.

Kits should include two flat double-sized bedsheets, two pillowcases and two pillows. All items must be new. Along with the items, include $1 per kit to help cover the cost of shipping to needed areas.

Each kit, with two of each item, can be packaged in a separate trash bag. Financial donations can also be made for the purchase of kits, which are estimated to cost $50. Funds should be made payable to Shreveport District UMC and noted for shipping or kits. Please bring all items to the church office by Friday, May. 9.

Worship leader, pastors to keep contemporary worship ‘flowing’

"The River will keep on flowing," Senior Pastor Ken Irby said in answer to questions about the popular contemporary worship service held each Sunday in Anderson Hall.

"This worship experience is an important ministry of our church. I really appreciate the leadership Mark Martin has brought to it, and plans are under way to insure that the service remains strong."

As the time approaches for Dr. Martin’s appointment to First UMC, Pineville, several steps have been taken to make the transition as smooth as possible. Dallas Weeks, who has been in The River for years working sound and playing and singing in the band, has been named the new worship leader. "All I am is a servant," Weeks said. "I’m grateful and excited for this new chance to serve God with you."

Preaching duties will be shared by Rev. Matt Rawle and Rev. Kathy Wafer, with occasional sermons by Rev. Irby. "The preaching rotation will be varied, many times with the same preacher for several weeks," Irby said. All the ministers will work with Weeks and the other leadership in The River to maintain excellence in every aspect of the service.
